Beautiful Trek Between Paro and Thimpu

The hike between Thimpu and Paro is one of the finest and easiest treks in Bhutan, but don’t underestimate the Druk Path; there is considerable climbing involved and the highest elevation you will reach is 4200 m.

Day 1 Paro - Jele Dzong (4-5 hour walk)
Distance: 8 km
Elevation: 1100 m
Grade: Medium
Camp Elevation: 3480 m

The trek begins at the National Museum in Paro at 2380 m. The first two hours you walk on a dirt road to the village of Damchena. From there the trail begins to go uphill through a forest of conifers and rhododendrons until you reach the Jele Dzong where you will camp in a yak pasture. On a clear day, the views of the Paro Valley and the snow-capped peak of Jomolhari (7314 m) are breathtaking. You can also visit the Jele Dzong which was founded in the 15th century by Ngawang Chogyel and now houses a school for monks.
Day 2 Jele Dzong - Jangchu Lhakha (4-5 hour walk)
Distance: 10 km
Rise: 280 m
Drop: 50 m
Camp Elevation: 3760 m

Today’s hike begins with an ascent to the Jelela Pass (3560 m) through rhododendrons and conifers and ends at the Jangchu Lhakha Meadow where you will make camp. You may see yak herders and their livestock in the early Spring or Autumn.
Day 3 Jangchu Lhakha - Jimilangtso (5-6 hour walk)
Distance: 11 km
Rise: 110 m
Decline: 0 m
Camp Elevation: 3870 m

After a short climb from the meadow you will come to the Tsokan yak herder camp. Here the trail splits; the righthand path leads to Larithang and Tseluney and the lefthand path to Jimilangtso. You will follow the lefthand trail along the Jangchu Lhakha Ledge past the Bja La rock which resembles an ox head. From here it is another few hours’ hike to arrive at the Jimilangtso Lake (3870 m) where you will make camp.
Day 4 Jimilangtso - Semtoka Tso via Jenetso (4-5 hour walk)
Distance: 11 km
Rise: 240 m
Drop: 40 m
Camp Elevation: 4110 m

Today’s hike takes you through groves of dwarf rhododendrons and along the beautiful Jenetso Lake (3950 m). From here you ascend to the pass between Simkota and Janetso at 4150 m, and end the day’s hike with the descent to the camp at Semkota.
Day 5 Semkota Tso - Thimphu via Phajoding (6-7 hour walk)
Distance: 18 km
Rise: 40 m
Drop: 1590 m

Today’s hike begins with a short ascent to the Labanala Pass at 4210 m from where you then wind through dwarf rhododendrons to Phumela, 4080 m above Phajoding. On clear days you have magnificent views of Mount Gangkhar Punsum, the highest mountain in Bhutan. You then hike down to the Phojoding Monastery at 3750 m for lunch. After lunch you will descend to Thimpu where you will be met and transferred to your hotel by car.
